induction? induction!

well guys, i'm still here & i'm still pregnant.

today marks 40w+6d and most definitely the last full day of my pregnancy.  we've decided to go the induction route & i'm scheduled for 7:30am friday morning as long as there's a bed for me.  sam & i both feel really good about this decision & like it's the right decision, so here we go.

i know there are a lot of people out there with different views on induction & i hope this doesn't become a place to voice negative opinions... we all do things for our own reasons & for what we think is in our family's best interest.  i feel like i've reached the limit on this pregnancy & am anxious to get this baby boy out of there for both mine & his sake.  my doctor feels like 41 weeks is the most optimal time to perform an induction & we run way less risks now than we would at 39 or even 40 weeks.

i am so excited that there is light at the end of the tunnel!  i will get to meet my baby boy number two this weekend & that is pretty amazing.  my mom flies in today & will be here to take care of parker & to meet baby boy at the hospital.  i'm so excited for that!  i'm also so excited to have her here to distract me from the day... today is gonna be a long one!  and how the heck do i sleep tonight knowing that i'm getting up in the morning & having a baby??  kinda crazy.

a small part of me is grateful this is what it's coming to.  i was so anxious & nervous for this delivery that i'm glad to be in a place now where i am practically begging for labor.  i've heard a lot of great induction stories from friends & family where it was calm, peaceful & the epidural worked like a charm.  YES.  keep those coming.

and a huge thank you to everyone who has called, texted, commented, facebook-ed or instagrammed me with encouragement, sympathy & support... it means the world to have so many people who care!

another great part of all of this waiting business is that i've gotten to spend some really amazing last few days hanging out with this little face.  p-ray has been such a blessing to our family & i just can't believe our days with him as our one & only are over.  i'm so excited for him to take on the role of big brother but it's gonna be so weird to have to share my time with another little guy.  i hope he understands.

well, if i don't post again between now & baby day, wish me luck!  feel free to leave your awesome induction stories in the comments & if you had a bad experience, let's talk about that next week, ok?

i'll be posting updates on my blog facebook page & instagram feed so if you're curious about how wrinkly & funny looking {and cute, obviously} baby number two is, follow along there.

and i'm out!  and so is baby number two... soon.

  2. Yay for baby boy coming soon!!! I had an induction the night of our due date. I had a lot of bad comments and negative vibes sent my way. I heard it was horrible and that the labor is worse blah blah blah. I was scared. Well it wasn't bad! My induction started at 9:30pm, water broke on its own at 12am...I had no drugs... labor was nothing everyone had said...I had great labor if that's such a thing. My daughter came at 8:20am via emergency c-section tho because her heart rate had decels when I contracted and she was sunny side up :( I labored to an 8 beautifully though! :) I wish you the smoothest induction, labor, and delivery.

  3. Hi Amy! Aidens arrival was perfect we got to hospital at 12 am and checks in. Then thy started the drip pitosine I think that's how you spell it, anyways they started the drip, by 3am I had contractions, got the Demerol, then by 10 more contractions 11 was the epidural and by 12:35 I was hearing him cry for the first time! Never felt A thing during delivery. Ooooh good luck! I am excited for you and Sam and Parker!

  5. Good Luck Amy. Easy peasy induction here for one of mine, IM sure it will be the same for you, nice and relaxing. Best wishes to you all. Looking forward to seeing pics of your little man, and all the excitement of Parker becoming a big brother ( and hugest fingers crossed you have baby before your induction, because they like to do that!)

  7. I was induced 10 days after my due date and it went great, worked like a charm! 24 hours after checking in, we had our baby girl in our arms. Normal delivery, both of us healthy and happy. It's normal to be nervous but you will do great :) Best wishes to you and your family!

  13. Add me to the list of successful inductions! At 40w+1d with my second son, I opted for induction (for several different reasons). I was already 4cm dilated and had started to efface so my body was primed and ready for the pitocin to work it's magic. Had a relatively peaceful drive to the hospital at 6am (compared to my first son when I was already in labor), got the pit started at about 8am, got my epi (that worked like a charm) at 1pm, and had him at 5:40. Easy breezy! Good luck, I'm sure you'll do great, I'll be obsessively stalking instagram for news ;)

  14. Good luck! 41 weeks - I think you deserve to meet your new little one tomorrow!

  15. My son was two weeks late so an induction was necessary because apparently he was comfortable.....mommy was not! So I served the eviction notice. He was my first child so I was already nervous and had heard all the bad stories about inductions but you know what? It was a really awesome experience overall. 12 hours and done. Slept through 8 hours of it with the epidural! I was terrified about child birth but my first experience, induction and all makes me think I could totally do that again. Good luck, momma!

  16. Good luck to you! no kids yet so I can't imagine how strange it must feel to know that you're having a baby tomorrow. I'm sure Parker will be a fantastic big brother.

  17. Already mentioned that my induction was great and my epidural was a dream. I mean I wouldn't necessarily wish pitocin on anyone, but that epidural made it perfectly fine.

And at 41 weeks I feel like people have little room to judge. Yes, who knows, maybe your body would have gone into labor on its own this weekend, but it isn't like at 39 weeks you decided you were done and threw in the towel. You've given your body a chance. Now it is time to get that baby out of there!

    Good luck!

  18. Yay for baby boy coming! I was induced the first time around and it went fast! All they did was break my water and I was in labor! I hope and pray for a smooth delivery, Amy. You're in for some serious bliss in meeting your new little boy :)

  19. Best of luck to you Amy! It's time for that little boy to vacay the premises! We are so excited to see his cute little face and to hear that everything went like a dream :)

  21. Good Luck!! I was induced on my due date cause they were worried about my son not gaining enough weight. It was the best decision we ever made!! They broke my water about 7:30 started having constructions and then and epidural at 11:00. We had a baby boy at 4:51 with 3 pushes. I would do it again in a heart beat!!

  22. I was in the same position a week ago! I said my whole pregnancy that I didn't want an induction. I work in womens health, I know the ins and outs of everything. I prepared myself for a long hard labor. I would have never guess that it would only take 4 hours. 4! And this was my first pregnancy. I just wanted to let you know that there are good induction stories too.

  23. I was due on Monday and went in Wednesday at 6:30pm for my induction. We started with Cervidil that evening and then at 6:30am on Thursday started Pitocin. By 10am I had my epidural (couldn't have asked for a better experience!) and my son was born at 12:29pm. I progressed from 1cm to 10cm with the epidural and I wouldn't change a thing about the labor! Congrats to you and your family and I wish for you a fabulous delivery for baby boy #2!!

  24. Oh well this little boy#2 has given you a run for your money, but it will all be so worth it!!! I wasn't induced with either of my boys, but I have also heard lots of great stories!! Everything will be awesome, you will have your smooshy little boy in your arms tomorrow (or saturday!)!!! SO excited. I will be stalking your IG/FB feeds non-stop until I see that little wrinkly face. :) Good luck friend! Will keep you and your fam in my prayers!

  25. I'm so excited for you guys! Everything will go great tomorrow, I can just feel it! I can't wait to see what he looks like and hear what you name him! If your mom at any time would like to go to the hospital without Parker (and he needs a nap) or whatever, PLEASE don't hesitate to call me.

  26. I can't wait to see the pictures!! I had an unplanned induction when my doc saw that my fluids were low but the induction was GREAT!! The epidural worked the very first time and I had my baby boy within 6 hours of getting it all started! (Only pushed for 30 minutes!) I hope you have an amazing induction and I know baby boy #2 will be perfect...just like Parker!!

  27. Good luck and OMG how exciting!! Can't wait to see him!

  28. hey, I am being induced tomorrow too! Good luck to you!

  29. I just thought of a great positive about being induced tomorrow: hospitals have air conditioning! Stay cool today in the mean time.

  30. Congratulations! So exciting!

I had a really great induction experience. It wasn't the way that I originally wanted it to go, but at 42 weeks w/ gestational diabetes...I had no other option.
I got to the hospital at 6 a.m., began the induction at 8 a.m., and baby girl was born at 5 p.m. : )
I also planned to go pain med free, but that didn't happen either. And I'm fine with that now, too!
I ended up getting the epidural at 8 cm. and it worked like a charm.
Even though I didn't feel all of the pain of the birth experience, I still felt totally present, aware, and in control. If that makes sense...haha.
    So, yeah, I had a great induction/epidural experience...and I'm sure you will, too! : )

  31. Yay!! How exciting! I had to be induced with all 3 of my kids. They were stubborn and did NOT want to come out LOL I had a smooth and quite a fast delivery with all 3 so i'm sure it'll go the same way for you. Can't wait to see photos!

  32. All three of my kids were induced! I perfer it that way, that way you can plan and know when the baby is coming. You will do fine, it is worth it as you know from having Parker! Good Luck :)

  37. I was induced! Not by choice, but because my water broke (just a little) and I wasn't having contractions on my own. I tried to go the all natural route but ended up getting an epi which worked beautifully! You're in such great shape and mentally prepared so I know it will go great! I guess I don't have any other frame of reference since I only have had one baby but I don't think childbirth is ever the easiest thing anyone has ever done...induction or not! ;) So don't sweat it! My induction was great and an experience I would never regret. Best wishes for a beautiful labor and delivery!

  41. I was induced for Brees and was really nervous about it. It all worked out perfectly, though, and my labor was super short and easy. I loved the fact that with induction, I was able to plan and have everything organized and ready. I am SO happy for you and your sweet family and will be patiently stalking you on Instagram!!!

  42. Yay! So exciting! I was induced with Dane and it was a breeze. Seriously. Epidural at the convenient time. Water breakage at the convenient time. Seriously no complaints. It's gonna be great! So excited for you!

  43. I was induced with Hunter the day after my due date because the doctor thought he was going to be big and didn't want me to end up having a C-section. I had an amazing experience. I went in at 6am, started pitocin at 7am, broke my water at noon, had an epi at 2pm, and Hunter was born at 6:30pm after just 5 minutes of pushing.

You will do fine. So excited for you and your family! Congrats! :)

  45. I don't have an Induction story but I had the date set with my son. My dr suggested 1 week past my due date and we went with it. Happily though, Jack decided he was ready and I went into labor on my own 2 days past my due date. This time around we are having a scheduled csection.
Good luck to you!! Can't wait to hear his name :)

  47. I was induced with my second; a 10lb baby boy 3 days past his due date. And honestly? That labor was easier than my first. I got my epidural sooner, I pushed less, I recovered quicker.

    In short? Induction was great.

My mom had 9 kids, some natural, some with an epidural, some induced. She described the difference between an induced labor and a non-induced labor like this:

Non-induced labor is like driving Geo Metro from 0-60mph. An induced labor is like driving a Ferrari from 0-60mph. Either way, you're still going to make it to 60mph (aka the hardest part of labor) but just quicker when you're induced.

Either way, congrats on making it past the due date with such optimism! It is definitely hard.

  48. We induced with Peyton and honestly it was great. We checked in got hooked up lounged for a few hours. I got my epi when things started to get serious and waited it out. It was a long 21 hours of labor but I was extremely comfortable through most all of it. At one point my epi stopped working but they fixed the situation right away and I was back in relaxation mode. At around 3 am I did some practice pushes waited for my Dr to come back from a c-section (2 hours later) and went for it. 22 min later I had a beautiful 9lb baby girl. And I went in to be induce 2 days before my due date... 2 days early and she was already 9 lbs! Im going to try and have a natural labor next time around but I wouldnt change anything about Peytons birth. She was my first and I had no clue what I was doing and it was wonderful to be able to take everything step by step.

I so hope that you have an easy, pain free and most importantly healthy labor for you and baby boy #2! Ill be thinking about you!! And like you said all that matters is that you and Sam made this decision with your Dr and it's the right one for you and your family. Good Luck momma!!!!!!

  49. My Ellery was induced at 41 weeks. Fast labor and easy delivery! Induction was taboo for the longest time in my head, but I am so glad we agreed to it as I too. Believe it was the best decision for our family.

  50. Yay for induction. I was induced with my first & only one {so far}. He was stubborn like baby #2 for you, didn't want to come out no matter what tactic I tried. We initally decided on induction because I was gaining too much weight, he was a chunky monkey, & doctor was afraid of the health risks associated with waiting. I heard horror stories about being induced, but honestly? I didn't have a single problem. I felt no pain, except the pressure from contractions that was really uncomfortable. They say your first kid is your longest labor, but I was only in active labor for 8 hours. They broke my water @ 8a, waited to dilate, then started pushing around 4p. Only pushed for 10 minutes & then out came Caden! You'll do great! With all the support you have, everything will go smoothly! I'll be thinking of you tomorrow & anxiously awaiting updates of the new addition! He'll be such a cutie pie!

  51. How exciting, it's really happening!! Good luck, I will send you easy labor and delivery vibes. :D As for advice, put off the epidural as long as you can so you can walk walk walk the halls and stairs. That worked for me when my induction wasn't progressing. Like a half an hour of walking and my labor progressed really fast. :)

  54. Good luck Amy. I know everything will go well.
I had my little guy induced just Tuesday, and I was somewhat uncertain at first. It was a wonderful experience though. The only concern I had was that my little boy would be to small and not really ready to come. There was a concern of him flipping around and going breech again. So they did a quick ultrasound confirming he was in the right position (head down)and then did the prostaglandin gel at 8:30am. With much walking, monitoring, and doing squats I was finally at a 2-3cm by 1:30pm, when the doctor came in and broke my water. Things stopped for almost an hour, and then picked up again.
I don't know if you plan on getting an epidural, but I did about 2 hours after water break, and then they started the oxytocin (as they called it, but I think it is the same as Pitocin). I believe the epidural slowed things down, we waited until 5:30pm... no change even though they were upping the dose of oxytocin every 20 minutes and then I started to feel everything, at 6:00pm the nurse discovered the epidural became disconnected and then within 30 minutes I went from 3cm to a 10 and had my little man out by 6:49pm. I don't know if that would at all happen to you, but I believe the epidural came out for a reason... otherwise I would have had to go in for a c-section at the rate I was going with the epidural in, because he was not coming down at all.
Everything felt natural for me... like a usual delivery, but I was on the epidural for the beginning of the distribution of oxytocin.
Anyway, 10 hours from beginning to finish for me, but he is here, healthy, and my biggest baby out of four.
I know things will go well for you and your little one. You, Sam, Parker, and your new guy are in our prayers.
Can't wait to see pictures and hear about your story of the process.

  55. All 5 of my babies were induced. No problems with any of them. Good luck with yours. Here's hoping for a good birth-day story!
