hair today, gone tomorrow.

i've talked before about how much i have been wanting {coveting} a nice camera.  like, here & here & here.  but anyone who has ever entertained the idea of buying a dslr knows there's a little more to it than just running out to your local one-stop shopping mart & picking one up.  it's smart to do a little research & figure out what one fits your needs, & how much you should invest in it.  because it's definitely an investment.

ok, what i'm getting at here in a very long drawn out way {let's not beat around the bush any longer, ok?} is that they're expensive.  right?  there, i've said it.  and sam & i just don't have the income that we used to since going from two full time incomes to one + my two-days-a-week income.  so i am pinching pennies.  pinching pennies where i can, & changing the way we're doing things around here.  this includes, planning meals much more efficiently, less weekend traveling, & spending less of my budgeted disposable income.

but oooooh, it will be worth it.

unless of course my plans for today go horribly wrong.  you see, i usually spend a ridiculous amount on getting my hair cut & colored.  i don't consider myself a high-maintenance type girl (what girl does?), but i do love a good hair job.  having a good cut & color can honestly put an extra little spring in your step, can it not?  but my hair costs are definitely an area where i could stand to benefit from some savings.  so, i am saving.  so much so, that my hair has grown way longer than it has been for years, & the horribly dark roots & gangly ends are evidence of that.

this weekend i took care of the length & nasty split ends problem & got a cheap trim at mastercuts.  no complaints there.

but here's where it gets scary.  i'm dying my hair myself tonight from out of a box.  what i usually pay almost $100 for, i am substituting with a $7 bottle of dye from fred meyer.

here's my "before" picture.

and, i'm going darker.  back to my roots, folks.  at least for now.  it should be fun mixing it up, right? RIGHT?  i'm sure i'll be thanking myself when that beautiful nikon strap is hanging around my neck.

"after" pictures should be posted tomorrow.  i'm hoping for the best.  wish me luck!

  1. I'm so proud of you for sacrificing your beautiful hair for something you really want. But let's face it, you will always have beautiful hair! :) I have made the switch to at home dye experiments as well and in my opinion they work out just fine. It will be great.
Good luck! I can't wait to see how it goes:)

  2. are you just dying it all over? or trying to add highlights? good luck? i used to have my hair cut and colored {just one all over color} but it fades just as fast as a box does so i just use the box now. a hair CUT on the other hand...let me just say you are brave for going to master cuts and im so glad it turned out. ive had one too many HORRIBLE cuts from places like that so i will not sacrifice the cut part of the deal. i just end up walking around with split ends a little longer than i used to....cant wait to see the after pic!

  4. Good luck on your hair dying!! I just got a new camera (birthday present from my entire family), and you wouldn't believe the difference!!! I got a Nikon D3000 and it is AMAZING!! Like, my blog pictures went from not great to WOW! The quality is fab. Hopefully you will get a new camera soon, because it is wonderful!

I have no advice for the hair issue. I haven't colored my hair in years (cause I have no money), and I don't get it cut very much. Its curly, it does what it wants.

  5. I know what you mean about a good dye and cut. I too used to spent about $100-$150 back when I use to get highlights. It use to cost me more because I have really thick hair and had it pretty long. Well I got tired of spending so much, that I cut it short and let my natural hair color grow in (black)and I now use those boxed dye's to color in my grey's LOL But I've saved so much and am able to spend that on other stuff. I hope you don't have to wait much longer for your camera. I've heard a lot of good things of the new D7000.

  6. Oh girl! I know what you mean about pinching pennies, we're in the same boat. Which is why my hair color is all natural and I haven't had it cut in like 5 months. EW! But seriously, once I stopped coloring my hair, I realized how much that extra $100 every other month was needed for other things. I bet your box color will turn out great! I used to do that on occasion and it looked pretty good, if I do say so myself.
I hope you get your camera sometime soon!!!

  7. I always dye my own hair. I went grey way too young. I can't afford the fancy gay man who used to do my hair since I am saving for a car. But I use dye from Sally's beauty supply. It's cheaper in the long run and nicer on your hair. But I'm excited to see pictures!

  8. Yay! I'm a firm believer of "out of the box" now that I have to pinch and save. Yup... oh the extra pennies made me a believer!

I can't wait to see your hair results as well as that future pretty Nikon strap around your neck!

  9. Oh I can identify BIG TIME with the saving and pinching pennies for a new camera. :) I have a Canon Rebel right now, but my heart is set on the Canon 60d and I've been collecting coins from the couch cushions to scrounge up enough. Can't wait to see your hair! I've thought of going darker with my hair, but like you, don't want to spend crazy amounts of money OR screw it up with a box job! Thanks for linking today! I hope to see you back next week!

  10. Love this. Totally understand the whole life on a budget scenerio. I went to DRASTIC measures to stay home with my little ones....aka I gave up my cell phone. Crazy, right? Maybe. But oh-so worth it. Hang in there! YOU CAN DO IT! :)

  11. Don't worry- I used to highlight my hair for years and decided to let it grow out (aka realized I didn't have money for that anymore)... and I actually like it darker now. You may just be surprised :)

  13. Brave WOMAN~ I am TOTALLY coveting a NIkon too, but I'm trying to wait until I'm actually pregnant to justify that expense. Thanks for stopping by a bun for my oven, I actually clicked to you this morning from the haps too! Nice to meet ya!

  17. Thanks for stopping by! :)
I just finished a hair-post myself (just not about me). I hope your little saving-for-an-awesome-camera plan works out (I'm sure it will!). I used to spend big bucks on my hair and then one day just went back to my natural color and started cutting it myself... I know, sounds kinda crazy, right? I have gotten the hang of it and (most of the time) it turns out just fine. Good luck!!
